How to maintain a motorcycle?
17 Oct,2023
First level maintenance
After the motorcycle has traveled a certain distance (usually 1000-2000km), lubricant should be added to the parts that need lubrication according to regulations, and the exposed bolts and nuts of the vehicle should be tightened. This maintenance operation centered around lubrication and tightening is called first level maintenance. In addition to routine maintenance, the first level maintenance should also include the following items:
① Motorcycles with chain transmission should have their chains removed for cleaning; Motorcycles with belt drive should have their pulleys removed for cleaning.
② Clean the carburetor, air filter, and fuel switch.
③ Clean the carbon deposits on the spark plugs and check and adjust the electrode gap.
④ Check if the contact of all vehicle cable connectors is good.
⑤ Check and adjust the free travel of the clutch grip, accelerator grip, brake grip or pedal, and add lubricating oil to the control cable.
⑥ Use lubricating grease to lubricate the speedometer and tachometer flexible shaft.
⑦ Change the oil.
Secondary maintenance
The maintenance work centered on inspection and adjustment is called secondary maintenance. Motorcycles should generally undergo secondary maintenance after driving 3000-6000km. In addition to the first level maintenance tasks, the content of second level maintenance should also include the following items:
① Clean the carbon deposits on the cylinder, cylinder head, piston, piston rings, and inside the muffler.
② Check the wear of the brake pads on the clutch friction plates and brake shoes, and adjust or replace them according to the wear situation.
③ Check and adjust the contact gap of the circuit breaker.
④ Check whether the axial and radial runout of the front and rear wheel rims meet the requirements. If the runout is too large, it should be adjusted or replaced.
⑤ Check and adjust the valve clearance.
⑥ Adjust the position of the rear shock absorber appropriately.
⑦ Check and clean the carbon powder between the engine, starter commutator, and commutator.
maintenance at three levels
The maintenance operation centered around inspecting and eliminating hidden dangers after disassembling the various components of the motorcycle is called three-level maintenance. Third level maintenance is generally carried out after driving 6000-10000km and should be checked at a motorcycle repair station.
① Disassemble the engine, remove carbon deposits from the cylinder head, piston crown, piston rings, exhaust ports, etc. Check the clearances between the piston and cylinder wall, connecting rod small end bearing and piston pin, large end bearing and crankshaft pin, and check the runout of the left and right halves of the crankshaft.
② Disassemble the clutch, check the free length of the clutch spring and the thickness of the friction plate, and replace the spring or friction plate if necessary.
③ Inspect the gears of the transmission for cracks, burning, peeling, and severe step wear.
④ Disassemble the steering column assembly, clean the steering column bearing, add enough grease, and adjust the clearance after reassembly.
⑤ Disassemble the front shock absorber, check if the free length of the front shock absorber spring meets the requirements, and replace the front shock absorber oil.
⑥ Check the wear of the brushes and commutator of the generator and starter, and replace them if necessary.
